Grants for biomass boilers.
There are two types of grants for biomass boilers.
There is a lot of detailed information on these grants, but this page provides a simplified over view.
To find out more detailed information visit our two details pages.
Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). Your boiler can earn you money with RHI.
The government Department of Energy and Climate Change has now announced the RHI payment for
Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive! The household / domestic RHU payment is now open for applications.
For more detailed information on your RHI payment and what payment you could
The RHI provides financial support for renewable heat technologies for the lifetime of the
installation (for 20 years). Payments are on a quarterly basis.

You will be able to receive payments for the heat you produce from a wood burning boiler through the government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).
The RHI is administered by the official regulator Ofgem who pay the tariffs with money from the Treasury.
This scheme is currently running for both commercial and domestic installations.
The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies
among householders, communities and businesses through the provision of financial incentives.
The UK Government expects the RHI to make a significant contribution towards their 2020 ambition
of having 12 per cent of heating coming from renewable sources.
The Renewable Heat Incentive is the first of its kind in the world.
The process in brief:
- Step One: you install in your property a biomass boiler and any other additional energy efficiency measures required.
- Step Two: you measure how much heat your renewable energy systems produce and
submit it to ofgem.
- Step Three: you get paid a fixed amount based on that output, the type of technology and the size of the system.
Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP). You can
receive a grant for installing the boiler.
The Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) is a one-off grant designed to help towards
meeting the costs of installing renewable technologies in your home, until the Renewable
Heat Incentive (RHI) is introduced for domestic customers.
An extension to the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP) scheme was announced by the
Department of Energy and Climate Change on 26 March 2013. The scheme is being extended
until the end of March 2014, ahead of the RHI scheme for householders.
The financial support covers biomass
boilers with payments ranging from £300 to £1,250 depending on the technology.
